Sunday Scroll #68

Been there ...
"... One prominent Republican wondered out loud whether the Democratic nominee, “really is grown up enough to be president.” Another used the phrase, “naive and inexperienced.” Yet another said, “the United States cannot afford to risk the future of the free world with inexperience and immaturity in the White House.” Who are they talking about?" Every single one of those quotations came from the campaign of 1960, when the Republicans attacked John Fitzgerald Kennedy for allegedly lacking the age and experience necessary to be president." - Big Al Gore - Detroit - June 18, 2008
[ ... done that]

Barack won't need all that money
[Klu Klux Klansman chasing a Black guy, "Swing State" written over a noose, and "They call it the White House for a reason"? Nah, those punkass crackers aren't racists! Barack should have just accepted the $85 million public spending limit -- he won't need any extra to fight the Racist Right]

John McCain's lobbyist pals lose out
Back on Feb. 29 the U.S. Air Force had awarded Northrop—teamed with the Franco-German European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co. (EADS)—the entire $35 billion order for 179 tankers capable of refueling fighter jets in the air. But Boeing protested, and on June 18 the Government Accountability Office, a congressional watchdog, backed its claim that the Air Force skewed the contest in favor of Northrop.
[In March it was revealed that John McCain had shamelessly sided with lobbyists over American workers at Boeing for the $35 billion tanker contract. Boeing at the time questioned McCain's support for EADS, who had three lobbyists who were on his campaign staff. McCain has no problem giving a huge military contract -- one that employs 44,000 Americans -- to a company largely owned by France and Germany to please his lobbyist campaign staff , and it's no big deal? Americans damn well better start paying attention to what John McCain truly is.]

That old supply and demand thing
Americans reduce driving 1.4 billion miles
Americans drove 1.4 billion fewer highway miles in April compared with the same month last year, and 400 million fewer miles than they did in March, according to the Transportation Department. This marks a decline of nearly 20 billion miles traveled this year, and nearly 30 billion miles traveled since November.
[So of course, anyone whoever took Econ 101 knows that since consumption has been reduced and supply remained steady, the price surely had to fall? No, it has skyrocketed. And you can thank George W. Bush for destroying our dollar and men like John McCain who cover for speculators, for our $4.08 gasoline. It's not about 'real' supply, or demand. -- Grab your ankles, 'my friends']

Their measly two cents
The opening of ANWR is projected to have its largest oil price reduction impacts as follows: a reduction in low-sulfur, light crude oil prices of $0.41 per barrel (2006 dollars) in 2026 for the low oil resource case, $0.75 per barrel in 2025 for the mean oil resource case, and $1.44 per barrel in 2027 for the high oil resource case, relative to the reference case. The median case suggests the effect on gasoline prices in 2025 will be $0.02 a gallon. The immediate effect will be zero as we’ll have to wait a decade to see any oil from ANWR.
[Drill in ANWR and save 2 cents a gallon by 2025? I laugh out loud when people whine about not drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. People are really quite ignorant on the facts. And by the way, that data is from the Department of Energy]

[John McCain truly is a corporate fascist]

Their favorite Justice is a fool
A new report from the Seton Hall University School of Law explodes the myth that some 30 detainees released from Guantanamo Bay prison have “returned to the battlefield” against American forces. This conservative urban legend was recently parroted by Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia in his dissent from the Court’s Boumediene decision. Scalia wrote that granting habeas corpus rights to Gitmo detainees “will almost certainly cause more Americans to be killed,” and supported this view by asserting that “at least 30 of those prisoners hitherto released from Guantanamo Bay have returned to the battlefield.” The new Seton Hall report (pdf) states that “Justice Scalia’s claim of 30 recidivist detainees is belied by all reliable data” ...
[Scalia is a judicial embarrassment. You would hope a Supreme Court Justice would get his information from more reliable sources than foolish wingnut blogs.]

What's Bush hiding?
George Bush today exerted executive privilege to block the House Oversight Committee’s subpoenas for EPA documents on global warming ...
[Bush exerts executive privilege on a report on global warming? Does that have something to do with national security? Hell no. What Bush is hiding is that his own EPA report confirms what every credible scientist in the world has been saying all along. He thinks you're stupid. And he might be right.]

That's hard to do
John McCain, the "Lobbyist and special interest PACs candidate" is the first presidential candidate in history to run a campaign against three bills, immigration, offshore drilling and campaign finance reform, that have his name on them.
[Hey Forida, how's Charlie working out for you?]

Then they put him in a padded cell
ZION, Ill. - A school bus driver and amateur artist from the Chicago suburb of Zion has legally changed his name to "In God We Trust." A Lake County circuit court judge approved Steve Kreuscher's (CROY'-shirz) name change petition on Friday. The 57-year-old's first name was changed to "In God," while his last name was changed to "We Trust."

Out of both sides of his mouth
'Lil' Bush' debates himself on his support for George W. Bush and loses!
['Maverick'? That lying little twirp has had his head up Bush's ass since day one and that video is slam-dunk proof.]

Pulling their leg
The hoaxers were pulling everyone's leg, it seems. A severed human foot that apparently washed up on the beaches of British Columbia – the sixth in recent months – was a grisly prank. ... It was placed on the shoreline as part of a "reprehensible" and "very disrespectful" stunt to deceive the growing ranks of reporters who have descended on Canada's rugged western coast, officials claimed yesterday. In recent months, five real human feet – all detached at the ankle and wearing trainers – have come ashore along a 60-mile stretch of the Georgia Strait ..
[Man, is that story weird or what?]

Fox News 'made me stupid'
Last week, Fred Hobbs, a state Democratic Party Executive Committee member in Tennessee, told Nashville’s City Paper that for all he knew, Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) “may be terrorist connected.” In a letter of apology to the Executive Committee, Hobbs now says he had that “incorrect” impression because he watched Fox News...
[Why would a Democrat watch Fox News? Surveys have continuously shown that its viewers are the most ignorant and misinformed people in America. One could argue that it's Fox News' fault, but one could also argue that it's just wingnuts, who by definition are ignorant, and therefore gravitate to Fox. Regardless, if you watch Fox News, you deserve to be fucking stupid!]

U.S.A!
There's a new battlefield for American soldiers in Iraq: the soccer field. And some of their opponents are probably the same guys that were shooting at them last year.
It's all part of a campaign to change the perceptions Iraqis have of Americans and win their support. Two weeks ago, soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division started to play a series of soccer matches against local teams in the villages of Kirkuk province, northern Iraq.

That would be the least he deserves

The Limbaugh Award

The Committee wasted no time at all this week in choosing the topic that the winner would be chosen for.

Several Republicans, from Dick Cheney all the way down to that stupid bitch from Ohio, Jean Schmidt, have told the lie about the Chinese drilling for oil 60 miles off our shore. That bullshit lie was just a ruse to rile up the flock. And as you know, Cheney had to eat some crow and admit he didn't know what the hell he was talking about.

But this week's award, the 68th 'Limbaugh Award', given here weekly at 'done that' goes to one of the Committee's least favorite human beings in the world - rated in the year 2007, the "biggest partisan liar in the history of TV" - a 'Terrible American', ladies and gentlemen, our winner, Mr. Sean Hannity.

You see, Hannity doesn't mind spreading a lie he already knows has been debunked since, a recent media survey found that 67.2% of Fox News viewers have an average IQ of 74.8 , with the other 1/3, averaging 86.2. The survey also found Hannity's radio listerners' average IQ was slightly lower than Fox viewers. He can get away with that at Fox and on his radio show, but we will call his ass on it here.

Congratulations Mr. Hannity, you're a 'Terrible American', and 68th winner of this, "prestigious, but infamous" award, for liars.
