Sunday Scroll #45

When you fight the wrong fight
George Bush’s senior national security advisers are debating whether to expand the authority of the Central Intelligence Agency and the military to conduct far more aggressive covert operations in the tribal areas of Pakistan. The debate is a response to intelligence reports that Al Qaeda and the Taliban are intensifying efforts there to destabilize the Pakistani government, several senior administration officials said.

Boom or Bust?
As phenomena go, Barack Obama's stunning and decisive victory Thursday in Iowa may someday rank as a watershed in American politics.
Or an asterisk. ... Detroit Free Press

Thank you, sir ... can I have another?Just shoot my ass
How much longer do we get to listen to Ol' Gomer play Sweet Home Alabama on that damn base guitar?

Snuggles

The dagger
Buoyed by the still unsettled field, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York City is growing increasingly enchanted with the idea of making an independent presidential bid, and his aides are aggressively laying the groundwork for him to run.
[The 'dagger', but to which Party?]

What a pair
West Virginia University stuck together after losing their head coach, Rich Rodriquez, and upset favored University of Oklahoma, 48-28, in the 2008 Fiesta Bowl.

The Limbaugh Award
Good old boy, Trent Lott, the 'former' Mississippi Senator who once admitted he longs for the good old days of segregation, is this week's recipient of the prestigious, but infamous, Limbaugh Award.

When Lott abruptly announced his retirement from the Senate in late November - essentially giving 30 days notice - he was asked if he had been illegally negotiating with any lobbyists about a job and he replied; "I’m not really involved in negotiation. I’ve tried to stay away from that."

On Friday, January 4, Lott and former Louisiana senator John Breaux announced the creation of their new lobbying firm, Breaux Lott Leadership Group. A wonderful fete considering they would have had to create that partnership in four days for Lott not to be in violation of Senate rules.

Trent Lott, often considered the proto-typical Republican politician - one who often quotes Bible scriptures and sings gospel music and chases skirts (and trousers, too, we're told)- is the 45th pick of the distinguished Limbaugh Award.

Congratulations sleazebag and good luck on your new job of making millions bribing your old colleagues.

What a country.
