Sunday Scroll #60

They always do better without a trail
A bill proposed by Rep. Rush Holt (D-NJ) to help states implement “a paper trail for voting machines so that voters could verify their vote and a recount could be performed” was stonewalled by conservatives in the House yesterday. Politico writes that when the bill “came up for a vote in the House Administration Committee on April 2, the Republicans on the committee gave it their unanimous support. But two weeks later, those same Republican members voted against moving the bill to the House floor.” -TP

Why this country is bankrupt
It is virtually impossible to overstate the profligacy of what our government spends on the military. The Department of Defense's planned expenditures for the fiscal year 2008 are larger than all other nations' military budgets combined. The supplementary budget to pay for the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, not part of the official defense budget, is itself larger than the combined military budgets of Russia and China. Defense-related spending for fiscal 2008 will exceed $1 trillion for the first time in history.

I've done that a few times
MUSCATINE, Iowa - Luck doesn't even to begin to describe golfer Ted Kemp's round on Monday. Kemp, a 12-handicapper, knocked in holes-in-one on back-to-back par 3s at the Muscatine Municipal Golf Course. Kemp used a pitching wedge to sink his tee shot on the 3rd hole from 130 yards out. Then, after remarking to his group that it would be something if he repeated his feat, he did just that. Kemp grabbed an 8-iron and nailed a hole-in-one from 182 yards out on the 8th hole.

Flip-Floppin' Fool
Lil' Bush on 4/18/08
- "I think if you look at the overall record and millions of jobs have been created, et cetera, et cetera, you could make an argument that there’s been great progress economically over that [Bush presidency] period of time.
Lil' Bush on 4/25/08 - Meredith Viera asked McCain whether Americans are “better off, by any means, than we were eight years ago,” McCain replied, “Oh, no. No.”
[In fairness to Lil' Bush, it's not really 'flip-flopping' if you're too dumb to remember you said the opposite just seven days before.]

Bronze Star
The newest issue of ESPN The Magazine highlights “bionic athletes” in its cover story, looking “into the lives of athletes who represent the future of sports and prosthetics.” One of the athletes featured on its cover is Iraq war veteran Jerrod Fields of Chula Vista, CA, who “uses a leg prosthetic to play basketball.” The 25-year old Army sergeant, who has been awarded both a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, was wounded in Iraq in Feb. 2005.

Yeah, bowl this!
Barack Obama, D-Ill., center, gets a loose ball as Kory Mckay, left, watches during a '3-on-3 Challenge for Change' basketball game at Maple Crest Elementary School in Kokomo, Ind., Friday, April 25, 2008. Obama is wearing a U.S. Marine corp T-shirt, given to him by an agent in his security detail.

Like a bad rash
Peace activist Cindy Sheehan wants to snatch House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's congressional seat from her in November, but first she's going to need the help - and signatures - of 10,198 friends and supporters. Sheehan was at San Francisco City Hall on Friday to take out papers for her independent run for Congress, but without those signatures from voters in the district, her name won't show up on the ballot.

Good place for the bitch
Syndicated columnist, right-wing pundit and New York Times best-selling author Ann Coulter found herself surrounded by hand soap, mirrors, porcelain and running water during a recent booksigning. The [above] photo of Coulter, shot by The Greenville News' Heidi Heilbrunn, alludes to a less-than-luxurious accommodation for Coulter as she greeted speech attendees and offered her autograph.

The Limbaugh Award

There was no way the Committee wasn't going to choose as the winner of this week's Limbaugh Award -- the commemorative 60th -- Mr. Tony Zirkle, the candidate for the Republican nomination in Indiana's 2nd district.

Zirkle, pictured above standing, "spoke in front of about 56 "white activists" at an event honoring the birth of Hitler".

When asked later if he agreed with the Nazi group he replied, "he didn't know enough about the group to either favor it or oppose it."

Oh yeah, did you think that was a picture of Moe Howard behind you there, you lying asshole?

Congratulations, you're #60!
