The hell they didn't!
"House GOP leaders are already on record this year opposing the student loan benefit. The GOP's 2013 budget proposal, sponsored by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), would have returned the Stafford rate to 6.8 percent."

It's funny watching the Republicans back-pedal on their support for doubling the interest rates on the Staffords loans. They all, including Mitt Romney, support Paul Ryan's budget and doubling that interest rate is exactly what that budget calls for.

You can get a mortgage loan right now for less than four percent. The discount rate is three-quarters of one percent. And Republicans want to gouge students for an extra 3.4%? They can't deny it. They're all on record just a month ago either voting for it, or endorsing it.  Not everyone falls for that etch a sketch bullshit.
