20 Years Ago Today

These are their heroes

Oliver North plays the part of a loyal Marine these days on the phony-patriot Fox Network. Yes, North is a former Marine, but he wasn't loyal, and he proved long ago, he isn't a patriot, either.

On May 4, 1989, Col. Oliver North was convicted on three felony counts of what was in a nutshell, in layman terms; selling thousands of TOW and Hawk missiles to the Ayatollah Khomeini and the same Iranian militants who had murdered 220 of North's fellow Marines (and 18 Navy and 3 Army servicemen) just two years earlier and running cocaine from Central America to streets of the U.S for the funds used to arm the Contras of Nicaragua.

Being viewed as a patriot by wingnuts doesn't require very much patriotism, apparently. As long as you are fighting socialism it doesn't matter if those you arm murder American servicemen, or pollute our streets with drugs.

And you ask, 'What would Ronald Reagan do' when faced with a decision on whether to arm the Iranians who had murdered our guys less than two years before? Well, we know what he did; he turned his head and played stupid. That wasn't a difficult role for the former B-grade actor.

Being the comedic stooge he was, Reagan once actually referred to the Contras as the 'moral equivalent of our Founding Fathers'. It's little wonder why wingnuts hate America so much with views like that of our founding.

The felony convictions against Oliver North were eventually reversed on a technicality; the appeals court ruled that witnesses in his trial were affected by North's previous congressional testimony, which he gave under immunity. The reversal was not surprising since one of the accomplices was the President of the United States.

But that doesn't change the fact that Ronald Reagan, Oliver North and a whole host of White House operatives sold missiles to our most hated enemy and cocaine to our kids so they could help a bunch of rightwing cowboy fascists terrorize their country.

Some heroes, huh?
