Sunday Scroll #97 - The Good Riddance Edition

George Walker Bush
43rd President of the United States
September 12, 2001 - January 20, 2009

'9/11 changed everything'
“From the very beginning, there was a conviction, that Saddam Hussein was a bad person and that he needed to go,” says Paul O’Neill, [Bush's first Treasury Secretary] who adds that going after Saddam was topic "A" 10 days after the inauguration - eight months before Sept. 11.

January memo warned of Al Qaeda
The memo dated January 25, 2001 - from counter-terrorism chief Richard Clarke five days after Bush took office - was an essential feature of last year's [2004] hearings into intelligence failures before the attacks on New York and Washington. It recommended that the new administration urgently discuss the Al Qaeda network, including the magnitude of the threat it posed and strategy for dealing with it. The meeting on Al Qaeda requested by Clarke did not take place until September 4, 2001.

Bush ignored August 6, 2001 PDB
Yeah well, he didn't cover our asses
At the 9/11 Commission hearings, Rice testified that the August 6, 2001 briefing was a "historical document" and not considered a "warning" : "This was not a 'threat report... [it] "did not warn of any coming attack inside the United States." Contrary to Bush being "tired of swatting flies," he was out in Crawford doing just that as he cleared some brush on vacation, ignoring the warnings he'd received and saying that attack was not considered "imminent." Ron Suskind's "The One Percent Doctrine" opens with Bush in Crawford receiving a hyper-nervous CIA operative who tries to warn him about the attack; Bush tells him "All right. You've covered your ass, now"

He gave his Saudi friends a pass
15 out of the 19 hijackers on 9/11 were Saudis
In charitable contributions alone, the Saudis gave at least $3.5 million to Bush charities -- $1 million by Prince Bandar to the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, $1 million by King Fahd to Barbara Bush's campaign against illiteracy, $500,000 by Prince Al Waleed to Philips Academy, Andover, to finance a newly created George Herbert Walker Bush Scholarship Fund, and a $1 million painting from Prince Bandar to George W. Bush's White House. Then there were the corporate transactions. In 1987, a Swiss bank linked to BCCI and a Saudi investor bailed out Harken Energy, where George W. Bush was a director, with $25 million in financing. In all, at least $1.476 billion had made its way from the Saudis to the House of Bush and its allied companies and institutions.

He was good at herding sheep
And lying us into a needless war

In Iraq, Scott McClellan added, Bush saw "his opportunity to create a legacy of greatness," something McClellan said Bush has said he believes is only available to wartime presidents. The president's real motivation for the war, he said, was to transform the Middle East to ensure an enduring peace in the region. But the White House effort to sell the war as necessary due to the stated threat posed by Saddam Hussein was needed because "Bush and his advisers knew that the American people would almost certainly not support a war launched primarily for the ambitions purpose of transforming the Middle East," McClellan wrote. "Rather than open this Pandora's Box, the administration chose a different path — not employing out-and-out deception, but shading the truth," he wrote of the effort to convince the world that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction, an effort he said used "innuendo and implication" and "intentional ignoring of intelligence to the contrary."
[The Mosiac]

And when our troops got there ...
Tens of thousands of soldiers deployed to Iraq were outfitted with Vietnam-era flak jackets incapable of stopping an AK-47 round instead of the Army's best body armor because the Bush Administration had failed to procure and provide them with the needed armor kits prior to their deployment. As of December 2003, nine months after the invasion and more than a year after U.S. forces were deployed to the region, 40,000 of the 130,000 soldiers in Iraq still lacked the best body armor. ... Bush opposed providing health care to soldiers serving on the front lines in Iraq and the War on Terrorism and their families. Despite his recent rhetoric, President Bush has clearly and repeatedly opposed providing reservists and their families with access to military health care. On July 8, 2003, Defense Secretary Rumsfeld stated "If the President is presented a bill that...expands TRICARE, then I would join other senior advisors to the President in recommending that he veto the bill."

He and Lil' Bush spit on our veterans
They both opposed new GI Bill for Iraq Vets
House leaders in both parties struck a deal on a war supplemental bill that includes expanded college benefits for veterans. The GI Bill is Sen. Jim Webb’s (D-VA) version, as well as a provision allowing troops to transfer the benefits to family members. President Bush has promised to sign the legislation. Now, however, Bush and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) — the two most vocal opponents of Webb’s bill — are trying to take credit for it.

A miserable failure
Bush has been Osama bin Laden's saving grace
At a crucial moment, the Bush administration diverted America’s military strength, political attention and foreign aid dollars from a necessary, winnable war in Afghanistan to an unnecessary, and by now unwinnable, war in Iraq. Al Qaeda took full advantage of these blunders to survive and rebuild. Now it seems to be back in business.

They stopped at nothing
Outed covert CIA agent to cover their lies
In July 2003--four months after the invasion of Iraq--Valerie Wilson would be outed as a CIA "operative on weapons of mass destruction" in a column by conservative journalist Robert Novak, who would cite two "senior administration officials" as his sources. (As Hubris discloses, one was Richard Armitage, the number-two at the State Department; Karl Rove, Bush's chief strategist, was the other. I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Cheney's chief of staff, also talked to two reporters about her.) Novak revealed her CIA identity--using her maiden name, Valerie Plame--in the midst of the controversy ignited by former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, her husband, who had written a New York Times op-ed accusing the Bush Administration of having "twisted" intelligence "to exaggerate the Iraqi threat."

While an American city was lost
WASHINGTON - In dramatic and sometimes agonizing terms, federal disaster officials warned President Bush and his homeland security chief before Hurricane Katrina struck that the storm could breach levees, put lives at risk in New Orleans’ Superdome and overwhelm rescuers, according to confidential video footage. Bush didn’t ask a single question during the final briefing before Katrina struck on Aug. 29, but he assured soon-to-be-battered state officials: “We are fully prepared.” ... On day two of Hurricane Katrina, Bush had a delightful time playing a guitar given to him by country singer Mark Wills ...

He shredded the Constitution with fear
The 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, requires a warrant to intercept international communications involving anyone in the United States. A secret court has granted these warrants quickly nearly every time it has been asked. After 9/11, the Patriot Act made it even easier to conduct surveillance, especially in hot pursuit of terrorists. But that was not good enough for the Bush team, which was determined to use the nation’s tragedy to grab ever more power for its vision of an imperial presidency. ... Ever since 9/11, we have watched Republican lawmakers help Mr. Bush shred the Constitution in the name of fighting terrorism.

He tried to undo the 5th Amendment
Supreme Court Resurrects Habeas Corpus
In what might be the most important decision made by the Supreme Court of the United States during the Bush Administration, five justices ruled in Boumedienne v. Bush on Thursday, June 12, that the United States government did not have the right to suspend habeas corpus, or legal due process. The government effectively did this through the passage of the Military Commissions Act of 2006, a legal measure meant to bolster an original executive order signed shortly after September 11, 2001, that gave federal authorities the power to detain suspected enemy operatives indefinitely without recourse to legal process and a trial. ... In a scathing rebuttal of Bush administration policy, the Supreme Court maintained that the detainees had the same basic rights as anyone held in custody by officials of the United States.
[No person shall be held to answer ...]

His policies have costs us tremendously
Susan Crawford, the “top Bush administration official in charge of deciding whether to bring Guantanamo Bay detainees to trial,” tells Bob Woodward in today’s Washington Post that the United States military tortured Mohammed al-Qahtani, one of the planners of the 9/11 attacks. As a result, Crawford decided the U.S. could not prosecute Qahtani: “We tortured [Mohammed al-]Qahtani,” said Susan J. Crawford, in her first interview since being named convening authority of military commissions by Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates in February 2007. “His treatment met the legal definition of torture. And that’s why I did not refer the case” for prosecution. […]

Embarrassed us throughout the world
George W Bush tried to make a quick exit from a news conference in Beijing on Sunday - only to find himself thwarted by locked doors. After answering just six questions from a group of US reporters, the president strode away heading towards the door. Bush tugged at both handles on the double doors before admitting: "I was trying to escape. Obviously, it didn't work."

He more than doubled our nation's debt
Bush represented the alleged party of small government, yet under him, federal outlays exploded. During his presidency, spending was up by 70 percent, more than double the increase under Bill Clinton. When Bush arrived, the government was running surpluses. Since then—not counting the horrendously expensive financial bailout—the national debt has nearly doubled.

Bushonomics destroyed our economy
George W. Bush has “presided over the weakest eight-year span for the U.S. economy in decades. … The number of jobs in the nation increased by about 2 percent during Bush’s tenure, the most tepid growth over any eight-year span since data collection began seven decades ago.” Additionally, Americans’ incomes grew “more slowly than in any presidency since the 1960s, other than that of Bush’s father.”

He and his friends, Fannie and Freddie
The Great Housing Market Crash
The undeniable historical record, in his own words.

Unfortunately, he's not done yet
CBS/AP) The federal government already has run up a record deficit of $485.2 billion in just the first three months of the current budget year, the Treasury Department said Tuesday. The deficit is on track to surpass $1 trillion for all of fiscal 2009 and some economists believe it could go much higher.

At least the sheep are down to 22%
He ends up half the man Jimmy Carter was
Bush's final approval rating [22%] is the lowest final rating for an outgoing president since Gallup began asking about presidential approval more than 70 years ago. ... Bill Clinton ended his terms with a 68 percent approval rating, while Jimmy Carter's rating was 44 percent.

The Limbaugh Award

Well Ladies and gentlemen, I would think it's not very difficult to figure out who is the 97th recipient of the Limbaugh Award.

George Walker Bush, the dumbest and most unqualified man to ever become president, gave us the most miserable eight years since the days of the Great Depression, and whose damage could very well lead to another, is the unanimous choice for this week's award.

His incompetence gave us 9/11, his lying got us Iraq, and his so-called 'conservative' fiscal policies have led us to the brink of economic disaster.

He began his pResidency as a liar and continued that pathological pattern of deceit just this week when in his last address to the American people he once again repeated his biggest lie; "America did nothing to seek or deserve this conflict."

When George Walker Bush say's 'this conflict', he's referring to Iraq, and we all know -- well, all except the 22% of the ignorant -- that he did 'seek' out Iraq even when he knew they weren't a threat or involved in any way with 9/11.

In two days, Americans get our country back. Good riddance, asshole -- you're by far the worst president in history. And congratulations, you're also #97.
