Sunday Scroll #87

Didn't quite work out that way did it? Two years ago this week SurveyUSA interviewed 30,000 Americans - 600 in each state - asking them who they would vote for in 2008 if the candidates were John McCain and Barack Obama. Surveyors concluded:
Obama carried ...
1. His home state of Illinois.
2. His birth state of Hawaii.
3. The District of Columbia.
McCain won 510 Electoral Votes. Obama won 28.
[A survey of 30,000 people - two short years ago. That's a huge sampling. No one is more deserving of victory than Barack Obama. No one has ever ran a better campaign for President. - H/T - Daily Kos]

We got this
Franken
1,211,304
Coleman
1,211,542
Go
Big
Al !
That's
the
7th
seat!

Franken will win the recount. Large, and unrealistic, cases of undervoting in areas that went Democratic 2 to 1, spells big trouble for Norm Coleman when the votes are hand counted. Come on Lucky #7!

Democrats for Detroit!
Pelosi and Reid Urge Aid for U.S. Automakers

WASHINGTON — Democratic leaders in Congress urged the Bush administration on Saturday to consider using the $700 billion bailout for the financial system to aid distressed American automakers, in a prelude to what may become urgent negotiations over additional economic stimulus measures. In a letter to Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr., the Democratic leaders said, “A healthy automobile manufacturing sector is essential to the restoration of financial market stability, the overall health of our economy and the livelihood of the automobile sector’s workforce.”
[Pelosi, Reid and Barack Obama are there - only George Bush and Hank Paulson stand in the way. We desperately need to rebuild our manufacturing base here in the U.S. and it all starts with the Big 3. Get the fuck out of the way, George!]

And a runoff in Georgia
There are 433 votes left to be counted in the Georgia Senate race. But no matter which way they go, the Fulton County Elections Board said, there would not be enough votes to give either Senator Saxby Chambliss or his Democratic challenger, Jim Martin, 50 percent of the total vote. That means a runoff will be held on Dec. 2.
[Take that cracker's seat, Martin!]

Tammy Bruce's prediction
"For several months now, before the polls were in a dead heat, before Joe the Plumber, before Obama let it slip he’s a socialist with Marxist tendencies, even before he revealed his plan to make the bitter and clingy unemployed by bankrupting the coal industry, I have been predicting a McCain win on November 4th. Now, as the campaigning comes to a close, I am more confident than ever."

Tammy at 8:43 PM Tuesday night
'I'll start by noting what I said on Tammy radio today--who we are as Americans is not determined by who is in the White House. While I expected a McCain victory, I also knew that this election would turn to be one of two things--an undeniable referendum for Obama, effectively a blowout, or a squeaker for McCain. We got the former. It has indeed turned into at least an electoral landslide.'
Nice call biiiaaatch ...]

One more from Tammy
November 6, 5:42 PM
"And I will remind you again about the popular vote differences for McCain who received 56,904,214 popular votes and Obama who tallied 64,644,293. That's a difference of 7,740,079, millions less than the population of Los Angeles county, and about half a million less than the population of New York City."
[Actually, Obama's up by 7,994,158, which is more than the entire 7,988,712 that voted in the largest 'red' state, Texas, for both candidates. Or more than twice the total who voted in Georgia, the second largest 'red' state. And, not to mention the 364 - 162 electoral college ass whuppin'. The numbers are what they are.]

Bill Ayers
'Whew! What was all that mess? I'm still in a daze, sorting it all out, decompressing. ... Obama's political rivals and enemies thought they saw an opportunity to deepen a dishonest perception that he is somehow un-American, alien, linked to radical ideas, a closet terrorist who sympathizes with extremism - and they pounced.'
[Bill Ayers, so bad, so mean, they dropped the charges.]

They really don't get it, do they?
In a new Rasmussen poll out today, Republicans overwhelmingly say that they want Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as their presidential nominee in 2012. Sixty-four percent of GOP respondents said that Palin would be their top choice in 2012:
[That's good news for Democrats. Sixty-four percent of 30% is 19%. That works.]

How about January 21, 2009?
BAGHDAD, Nov. 6 -- Two days after the election of Barack Obama, Iraq's chief spokesman said with unusual forcefulness Thursday that his government will continue to insist on a firm withdrawal date for U.S. troops, despite American demands that any pullout be subject to prevailing security conditions. "Iraqis would like to know and see a fixed date," spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said ...
[Obama has said 16 months. He should go 1.6 months. Tell them you slipped a digit.]

CAMAGUEY, Cuba (AP) — Powerful Hurricane Paloma slammed into southern Cuba on Saturday as authorities scrambled to move hundreds of thousands of people to safer ground and protect crops on an island still reeling from two other storms.

Men at work
[Friday’s] jobs report was dreadful — much worse than economists had anticipated — and you will be hearing a lot of comparisons that try to put it in context. This one may be the most telling: The share of adults who are working — 61.8 percent — is at its lowest level in 15 years. And even that, arguably, understates the depth of the problem. Fifteen years ago, women were less likely to be in the labor force than they are today. The share of adult men with jobs, which has been gradually falling for much of the last few decades, is now at its lowest level since a two-month period in early 1983. Other than that, it’s the lowest level since the Labor Department began keeping records in 1948.

Levin coasts to re-election
DETROIT - U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, riding a wave of popularity he's built up over three decades, rolled to another six-year term Tuesday by winning his latest re-election bid. The Detroit Democrat beat Republican challenger Jack Hoogendyk's ass like a bad piece of meat to extend his reign as the longest serving U.S. senator in Michigan history.

Reality is distressful to some
TRAVERSE CITY -- Not everyone is excited about the nation's first black president. Some are downright hostile. Employees at Hampel's Key and Lockshop on Randolph Street in Traverse City flew an American flag upside down Wednesday in protest of Sen. Barack Obama's victory in the presidential election. And one employee directed a racial slur at Obama during a telephone interview with a Record-Eagle reporter. "(The inverted flag is) an international signal for distress and we feel our country is in distress because the n----- got in," said Hampel's employee Rod Nyland, of Traverse City.
[We have people, and whole areas of Michigan, a lot of them 'up north', that if you didn't know better, you'd think you were in Mississippi or something. Fucking ignorant Republican bastards!]

One last act of classlessness
Before McCain delivered his concession speech Tuesday night, Palin reportedly wanted to speak to the crowd on her own, but chief strategist Steve Schmidt is said to have vetoed the idea. Schmidt was noncommittal when the New York Times asked what he thought of Palin's performance on the campaign trail. "I’m not going to go there," he told the paper. "There’ll be time for the post-mortems in the race."

They tried their damnest!
"I had to go down and see a judge," screen actor Tim Robbins told TMZ after his record disappeared from the New York City voting precinct where he'd been casting his vote for over ten years. Robbins was told on first arriving at the precinct that he would have to cast a provisional ballot. After an argument with a poll worker, he instead went to the City Board of Elections to obtain proof that he was registered. "This is what you have to do to vote," he said.

You gotta be shittin' me!
FLAGSTAFF, Arizona - An 8-year-old boy has been charged with murder in the shooting of his father and another man in a rural community in eastern Arizona, authorities said Friday. The boy was charged with two counts of premeditated murder in the death of his father, 29-year-old Vincent Romero, and 39-year-old Timothy Romans, St. Johns Police Chief Roy Melnick said.

This country is 'center-left'
Indeed, a majority of Americans want progressive solutions to the nation’s problems, supporting universal health care, expanded environmental protections, a higher minimum wage, the availability of safe and legal abortions, federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, and the rights of same-sex couples to be legally recognized. Additionally, a majority opposes the Iraq War. TP

Don't you hate it when that happens?
Reporting from Kabul, Afghanistan, and Istanbul, Turkey -- The U.S. military acknowledged today that 37 civilians were killed and 35 injured during fighting this week in Kandahar province between insurgents and coalition forces.

Alright, where were we?

Let's get this goddamn party going ...

Bush leaves staggering mess
Most presidents-elect can look forward to a transition period after Election Day, during which they recover from the rigors of the campaign and assemble their cabinet and White House staff. However, with a looming recession and two wars under way and no fresh initiatives coming from the Bush administration to address them, whoever is victorious in tomorrow's voting won't enjoy that luxury.

What, are they mandatory?
Outrage over 'chastity belt' lingerie
Feminists around the world have reacted with horror to a new line of lingerie that comes equipped with a GPS tracking system. The 'find me if you can' range of underwear has been described as a modern-day, high-tech chastity belt..

The ever shrinking wingnut
Nov. 5 (Bloomberg) -- News Corp., the media company controlled by Rupert Murdoch, said fiscal first-quarter profit fell 30 percent on slumping television advertising and a shortfall from films such as ``Space Chimps.'' ... Profit at Fox television declined 70 percent to $54 million, reflecting the drop in ad sales at local stations. Results at the Fox network were in line with a year earlier. TV revenue slid 15 percent to $974 million, the company said.
[I'll be damned, I missed that headline over at the Drudge Report ...]

I've stated this before
"An America where we end welfare as we know it. We will say to those on welfare: You will have, and you deserve, the opportunity, through training and education, through child care and medical coverage, to liberate yourself. (Applause) But then, when you can, you must work, because welfare should be a second chance, not a way of life." - From Bill Clinton's acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention - NY, NY - July 16, 1992
[Bill Clinton was NOT dragged into welfare reform by a Republican Congress; He campaigned on it.]

The Limbaugh Award

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to 'done that' on this the first weekend after Tuesday's historic election of Barack Obama and significant Democratic gains in both the House and the Senate. Boy, after this week I feel like calling this blog 'done that, too'.

As the four of you well know, the 22 esteemed members on the Limbaugh Award Committee consists of 10 Republicans, 5 Independents, 2 'Constitution' (sic) Party members, and only 5 Democrats, so there are not a whole lot of happy campers around here this week.

But hey, fuck em'. America spoke pretty clearly, didn't she?

The bad thing about having 22 members is you can have ties sometimes. I'm thinking about throwing one those 'Constitution' nuts off but he's a little too fucking crazy, if you know what I mean?

So for only the third time in the long, long history of this 'prestigious, but infamous' award for liars, we had a tie. Which meant, of course; I had to you use my tie-breaker authority.

Eleven committee members voted for Robert Novak. Damn, I thought he died? No, that's right, he just ran over some guy.

You see, Robert 'The Weasel' Novak wrote a column the day after this week's election stating that Obama and Democrats "neither received a broad mandate from the public nor the needed large congressional majorities."

Okay, that's his opinion. Barack won by 8 million, Democrats picked up 6 Senate seats and could pick up 3 more, and they picked up 18-20 more House seats, but everyone has an opinion.

But Novak's problem, which Think Progress points out, is that in 2004 when he was asked if George W. Bush's win 'was a mandate', he replied, 'Of course it is. It’s a 3.5 million vote margin.'

The other eleven members selected Brent 'Bozo' Bozell. Wasn't his old lady on one of the planes on 9/11? No, that's right, that was that other asshole, Ted Olson.

Bozell is one of the whiners out there this week stating that Obama ran 'to the right' to get elected. Of course, these same lamesass idiots were calling Barack a socialist all the way up to Tuesday at about 8:01 PM EST. But hey, fuck em'!

Brent Bozell is a big shooter in Republican circles right now. In fact, many of the whiney babies all met at his house this week to lick their wounds and deny reality.

Friday on Fox News Bozell proclaimed, Obama "ran as a Reaganite" and "a fiscal conservative". Of course that's bullshit, Reagan was NOT a 'fiscal conservative'. And on top of that, Bozo just 10 days earlier on Fox was calling Obama a socialist. But now he's a 'Reaganite'? Come on asshole.

Congratulations Bozo. Novak is a CIA divulging lying traitor but he's too old and too inconsequential to matter, and since you're such a bigshot among phony-conservatives these days, you get my tie-breaking vote.

You're #87, dickhead.
