'Two U.S. soldiers who died in Iraq in February were killed by "friendly fire," according to a military investigation, which cited poor training and planning.Back in February and March, and then August, I wrote about the death of 18 year old Matthew Zeimer, and how because of the 'surge', he and many young men like him, were rushed to Iraq without the proper training. Through a Freedom of Information request from the Associated Press, the Army has now admitted that Pvt. Zeimer and Spc. McPeek were killed by 'friendly fire', citing 'poor training and planning'.
Spec. Alan E. McPeek, 20, of Tucson and Pvt. Matthew Zeimer, 18, of Glendive, Mont., were killed Feb. 2 at an Army outpost in Ramadi, in western Iraq. The soldiers' families initially were told the men were killed by enemy fire.'
You won't catch this story on the 6 o'clock news tonight. The Washington Post had this story on page A11.
Dying in Iraq isn't that big of a deal anymore. Now that we're losing only a man a day, who cares to bring up a situation 10 months old where a young man was killed because of a rush to get him there?
And as for the other 3,895 killed, the 29,000 wounded or the estimated $2 trillion we will have wasted on this senseless occupation that should never have happened? Maybe we can just sweep that under the rug, too.
